Re: Random wire questions

Yes, link N & G and take the coax outer to it. To minimise noise, try earthing the far end of the coax outer or the receiver end, or both. Noise can enter your system via several ways and there seems to be no hard and fast rule in practice. If your coax is more than about 10m, then a pair of 9:1 tra...

Re: Random wire questions

Hi d. That random wire is perfectly good, but you may find it picks up lots of noise from your house and those of your neighbours. It's not a good idea to bring a receiving antenna directly into your home for this reason. Much better to use a length of co-ax from the Hiz port to a point in the garde...

Re: Just downloaded SDR UNO 1.13

It sounds like you were zoomed in, forcing the LO off the screen.

Re: Just downloaded SDR UNO 1.13

There should be no need to set the LO. Just set the required RX frequency by hitting the space bar and typing in the frequency in KHz followed by ENTER. The LO freq will go wherever it is necessary. Then just de-tune a few 10's of KHz and re-click to avoid the central spike. Just ignore the LO.

Re: 3rd party Metal Case for SDR1

I can't see it doing much at all unless you have a powerful source of QRM very close, such as using your RSP taped to your laptop or plonked on top of a switch-mode PSU.

Re: What's This Minor Audio Distortion From?

I'd say that was a transmission fault, Noel. It seems to take the same form every time, so it's unlikely to be in your setup.

Re: New user question - please see my screenshot

Stephen - you mention a longwire antenna connected to the Hi-z input. Is this a longwire *directly* into the RX? If so, I'm sure you know that these days bringing a high-impedance wire into your shack is a cast-iron way of picking up every bit of noise in your own house and your neighbours. A coax f...

Re: New user question - please see my screenshot

Looks like you have a strong local source of interference, maybe from a switch-mode psu or a plasma TV. It may even be from your own home/shack. What antenna system are you using?

Re: Interference identification?

FCC caught with their pants down on the issue... https://smartmeterharm.org/2016/04/23/fcc-finds-power-line-communication-plc-can-reach-or-exceed-radiation-limits/ That's appalling, but any knowledgable SWL or Ham could have told these 'experts' that if you apply a significant amount of RF to a pie...

Re: what can it be this huge interference.... ??

It could be almost anything, from any kind of device that uses a switch-mode supply to a plasma TV. I see the spikes occur every 10 KHz, which seems a bit low for most switch mode supplies. If you have a radio which covers longwave you could go out and hunt it down, but be warned that low frequency ...
