Omnrig Issues (I think)

Post by rzar66 » Sat Dec 02, 2017 4:49 pm

Hello all,

New to this forum. I just purchased a RSP1A at my local HRO. I would like to use this as a panadapter with my Kenwood TS-590SG. I have seen the videos on YouTube on how to set this all up with the SDRuno, TS-590SG, and Omnirig combo and I followed those instructions completely. I have SDRuno working fine controlled by my computer and getting signals. When I installed Omnirig to have SDRuno follow my rig and my rig to follow SDRuno is where I started having problems, and I am not completely sure what is causing the issue. This issue is that SDRuno and Omnirig will not stay on-line with each other. It keeps alternating between on-line and "rig is not responding" every 5 to 10 secs. If I change frequency in SDRuno it will take about 10 to 15 secs (sometimes up to 30 secs.) for my radio to follow. In addition SDRuno will not follow anything my rig does, for example, When I spin the VFO to change frequency it will often snap the radio back to the frequency displayed in SDRuno. I have tried various polling rates with no success.

TIA,
Ryan

Ryan,

Have you found a solution to this problem? I have the same problem with my TS-590SG and RSP2.

Have you tried another rig control program?

Might help zero in on where the problem is located.

The Kenwood ARCP-590G program controls the radio perfectly. Changes made in the software change the radio settings and changes made to the radio are reflected in the software. So that seems to indicate that the radio, USB cable, USB port on the PC and the USB driver are ok. Likely no com port conflicts. I think the issue lies with Omnirig. I have tried the Omnirig client program also. Port settings are all checked at 115,200, N,8,1. Omni client will sometimes show the rig is online after closing the setting dialog, but it changes to Rig is not responding after a few seconds.

Otherwise, my symptoms are identical to Ryan's. Omnirig is v1.16 and SDRUno is v1.22. 590SG firmware is v1.04

Might be a problem with the Kenwood driver. See here for what other users discovered...

Thanks. I am using the latest 6.7.5 driver version. The Silicon Labs site doesn't show the 6.7.3 version anymore. Any idea how to get it?

I contacted Silicon Labs and they sent me the 6.7.3 version of the driver files but not the executable installer. I found a software development kit on their site (v6.7.4?) that turned out to have the v6.7.3 driver executable installer included in it.

Most important, the RSP2, Omnirig and the 590SG now work properly together.

Thanks to everyone for the help. It looks like Kenwood has a problem with their driver. I contacted their tech support, but have not gotten a response yet.

I used the Wayback Machine to find the driver for you. You can download it here from the archived Kenwood page (bottom of page).

Russ,

Sorry I didn't get back. I gave up on this post when I didn't get any replies. The older driver version solved the problem and everything works as it should. That link Roger posted from the SDR Console group is my post also and where I finally figured out what was wrong. Make sure you save the older driver file and keep it in a safe place. My response from Kenwood was basically they don't care.

Ryan,

You got more response out of Kenwood than I did. I emailed them about it yesterday and have gotten nothing. I hope this isn't how their support operates. I have an old Icom R-75 receiver, out of production and 15 years old that had a problem. I contacted Icom and they were very responsive in getting it straightened out.

I definitely have the driver backed up. Silicon Labs was very helpful in providing the older driver also.

Kenwood needs to fix this as the external SDR display is one the major benefits this radio has compared to the IC-7300.
