You can just upgrade over the previous install. You might need to run the reset (MAIN panel OPT button and select RESET) after the installation for the new features to take effect. You will loose any saved workspaces when you run the RESET.

I've lost the saved workspaces in every upgrade.

The new version lifts limitations on window sizes, so you may WANT to redo your workspace anyway.

Is any guidance available on the memory panel grid resize options? - there doesn't appear to be any in the 1.22 manual as far as I can see and having tried dragging the column delimiters around, I wondered whether another method was intended.

The inability to resize the memory panel columns is a bug in the panel setup. I will have this fixed in the next release.

I don't know whether the width of the left side is part of what you're describing w/regard to "grid", but can you please consider making it a little wider (or ideally make it resizeable) too?

I don't think I'm being overly wordy with the naming of my .s1b files, but some of them don't really fit...
