file transfer with qpsk in gnu radio

I am attempting to transfer an image file using qpsk modulation. I have created a flow graph using a random number generator that outputs bytes It works as expected. When I replace the random number generator with a file source, it also works. The output and input signals are compared, with a delay.
The problem is, when I remove the output time sink and replace it with a file sink, all I get is garbage. I've run out of ideas.
Why doesn't it work?
I would like to attach my .grc files, but I'm being blocked. Any suggestions?
