No IF vs Low IF - when, why, and how?

I'm trying to understand the differences between No IF and Low IF and how they relate to a regular Intermediate Frequency for analog receivers.

Anyone have any good way of explaining it or any good books that explain it in simple terms?

I'd also like to learn when an why one or the other is used.

Thanks,
Jared

This question gets asked often and there are a lot of discussions on the net, just google it. Here is one thread that describes some of the trade-offs in simple terms...

I did some google searches, but often find them rather complicated and confusing. I'll take a lot at this link.

Any other suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,
Jared

This may seem like a stupid question but,

How and where does one set either "LO IF" or "No IF" in the newest version of SDR UNO?

I seem to be having trouble finding this setting window.

Go to the Main panel and click SETT. in the upper left. There, under INPUT you will find a setting for IF mode. Also, in the same settings, click the CAL tab and you can select the LO Plan Frequency.
This is from the Cookbook: http://www.nn4f.com/SDRuno-cookbook.pdf

Ah that's where they put it. in 1.04 there was a separate window for the Lo If and No If settings. This new place is right there. Glad it was not a snake. LOL

When set to Lo If how lo is the if?
