Help on How to get started in learning about SDR
Help on How to get started in learning about SDR
So many choices in hardware (SDRPLay, FunCube, BladeRF, Myriad RF (Novena), 1MHz+ HackRF Blue / HamItUp,etc ) and software (SDR#, SDRTouch, Studio1, HDSDR, etc) that it's a bit overwheming!
I'm not 100% sure what I expect to do with SDR (decoding AM/FM Radio sounds pretty cool), so don't want to spend too much (ex.WiNRADiO WR-G39DDCe), yet I also don't want to invest time/money into something I'll outgrow quickly.
Is it possible to use the SDRPlay hardware with the SDR course at GreatScott? If not, is there any beginner tutorial that can work with the SDRPlay?
For example, transmitting might be nice, so that I could decode a couple RF remotes that I have, something like:
http://wiki.beyondlogic.org/index.php?t ... Controller
http://www.irrational.net/2014/03/22/re ... iling-fan/
http://mightydevices.com/?p=300
Any recommendation what hardware/software would be recommended for a total sdr newbie ?
Thanks!
Ben

Hi Ben,
If you have the time take a look here http://www.rtl-sdr.com/ you can find a lot of info about sdr in general and what you can do with it and which software to use, regarding hardware, i played a while with cheap sdr's sticks 25mhz to 1800mhz and after a while i bought myself the sdrplay for its coverage of 100khz-2000mhz so i can do anything i like on between those frequencies’, other sdr's dont have that coverage and if they do they are expensive.
sdrplay users have setup a Facebook page with some experts and they are very helpfull to beginners, i dont have the link for you but on the forum with a search you will find it. You can alo see it at some blog messages from Jon mention it on the sdrplay website.
good luck and have fun.
