Ads-b and virtual radar problem

I'm following the instructions for installing adsb dump and virtual radar and the manual says to start dump1090 from the start menu (there's 4 to choose from) and it says to setup a virtual server ...but as soon as I start dump1090 it disappears from the screen so how am I suppose to start a virtual server???
