Earthing/grounding of coax outer braid

I know that I'm a dummt, but would be grateful for advice on how best to physically connect coax outer braid to an earth-rod.
Is it acceptable to turn back some of the outer braid when fitting say a PL259 to an SO239 and clamp the earth strap or wire to/around it, covering the lot with self-amalgamating tape and running the earth lead down the mast to the clamp on the earth-rod?
If not, what is the "usual" way of doing this?
I have a nagging feeling that there must be a better way...(I've thought of a couple, but they might be just as questionable).
