NOOB QUESTIONS

Postby KF5SMH » Sat Nov 28, 2015 8:39 pm

Hello everyone,
I just ordered my SDR Play yesterday and am anxious to get my hands on it. I have been tracking and listening to Satellites for over a year now, mostly voice and beacons, but with the addition of Fox1A i have decided it is time to finally go to SDR, (been wanting to try it just was not sure on what.)
I have a couple of questions going into this if someone would be kind enough to take the time.
1 I will mostly be using this for satellites at this time, am I correct in using an Arrow dual band antenna for better reception?
2 I have seen folks talk about copying NOAA WX images and viewing them, additional software for the image manipulation would be what?
3 I have read about staying outside the RF envelope of my TX antennas, is there a rule of thumb, or is that based on the radiation pattern of a given antenna? (I assume the latter but just would like to check)
Thanks in Advance for any and all help!

P.S. There are really two of us here in the area just getting into this, so I am certain these will not be the last questions.

I use SDRplay with a QFH antenna (http://www.instructables.com/id/NOAA-Satellite-Signals-with-a-PVC-QFH-Antenna-and- and the Windows
program Wxtoimg http://www.wxtoimg.com. An amplifier for the 137 MHz band located at the antenna will help boost low elevation signals.

Either SDR-Radio or SDRsharp (build 1361) can be used to control SDRplay.

It's a lot of fun.
