Strange signal?

Post by lordkev » Sun Jan 24, 2016 11:09 pm

I am seeing the following signal throughout the spectrum all the way from HF (10m, 6m) up into VHF (2m). It appears to be some kind of timecode signal. I thought it was a harmonic, but it's definitely quite strong even up in the 2m band. Any idea what the source might be?

Hard to tell from what you have posted.

However, from your description and screenshot if I was to make a guess, it looks like the type of RFI / EMI you will see from wired ethernet/networking. You will find this type of EMI / RFI from HF through VHF at regular intervals and has a repetitive sound and pattern.

Putting clamp on ferrites on the cables near your routers, computer, and the SDRPlay may help, it all depends on how the RFI/EMI is finding it's way into your receiver - i.e. through your antenna or through your cabling as common mode. If you are using a simple whip antenna on your SDRPlay you might try using a longer piece of cable and separating the receiver and antenna by some distance which may help reduce the level of the interfering signal.

EMI - Electro Magnetic Interference
RFI - Radio Frequency Interference

cheers, Graham
