Connection to Yaesu FTDX3000

Post by shortwave100 » Thu May 12, 2016 8:50 pm

I'd like to buy an sdrplay to usewith my Yaesu.

But I have no clue how/where I would get a cable to connect the radios IF out to the sdrplay.

Do I need to somehow make one ? What connectors and type of cable do I need ?

Can anybody point me to a source of information on this ?

Cheers

I believe the FTDX-3000 has an RCA port. If so, you will need a shielded coaxial cable with RCA male on one end and SMA male on the other. With my HF rigs I use 50 ohm mini-coaxial cables for this purpose - either RG-174 or RG-316 - but that's just my preference. When ordering the cable be sure the SMA connector is designated SMA and not SMA-RP (reverse polarity). SMA-RP is used for other applications such as WiFi. There are a number of sources for the cable on eBay, Amazon and the internet.

You will also need a USB cable. I recommend one that is shielded and has a ferrite choke.

Hope this helps.

It does help thanks

As far as Amazon...what sort of search terms ? I tried 'SDR cable', 'SDR connector'...to no avail.

As far as I know there is no "SDR Cable" or "SDR connector". What you want is a generic 50 ohm mini-coax cable with an RCA male and SMA male.

So try something like this: "RG-316 cable with RCA Male to SMA Male"

Thanks for that link.

Does anybody know.....specific to the FTDX3000...am I ok to go ahead and transmit when the sdrplay is connected to the IF OUT with this cable ? ....without fear of feeding back to the sdrplay is any way ?

I know these are basic questions but I guess that's what my knowledge is....basic !

It is fine to connect to the IF out because it is part of the receiver's signal chain and is therefore protected during transmit. If you join the Facebook Group on https://www.facebook.com/groups/sdrplay/ you can do a search on FTDX3000 and see a lot of threads discussing panadapter use.

Good luck and 73, Jon

It works fine, you can TX, and also it works better on the RF out, the advantage is that gives you several more receivers across several bands using the 8 mhz wide bandwidth...
