ADSB News?

Hi SDRplay,
Any further news on an ADSB solution? Seems such a waste to be using a dongle with planeplotter when SDRplay is perfect for the job. ;)

What helps most with my ADSB is primal scream therapy and the pills.

j/k

I'd be damn curious too how the RSP would improve the SBSPlotter plot, but then again no SNR and no gain will extend the radio horizon beyond the LOS geometry, which is already covered pretty well by an RTL dongle with R820T2 tuner. Antenna pattern, gain, position and the surrounding terrain is really the trump card on 1090 MHz. I learned that just recently when I demonstrated RTL1090+Globe-S with the ridiculous stock mini-magnet mount mini-antenna on the tower of our little local airstrip and got instant 250 NM with that to my surprise, forming a nice round hemisphere on one side later on, with the tower perfectly blocking everything on the other. At home even some close trees are creating a pronounced shadow.

Anyway, an impostor version of the RSP ExtIO.dll acting like the normal rtlsdr.dll for all the software that can talk to that would be cool. :)

SDRplay has released cross platform versions of ADS-B (dump1090) specifically for the RSP.
The Windows installer can be found on our website http://www.sdrplay.com/windows.html (2nd blue box on the right hand side which downloads software, user guide and release notes)
Versions for non-Windows platforms can be found on our github repository https://github.com/SDRplay
This is the first release of a dump1090 program from SDRplay, and we encourage feedback. With future upgrades our intention is to eventually unlock the full 12 bit capability of the RSP.

I installed dump1090 on my win7 desktop today, connected the SDRplay to my Discone-Antenna (12m high) and --- received many transponder-signals from airplanes up to 80km away. After the installation of "VirtualRadar" I could even see the results on a map.
I was given the SDRplay as a Christmas present and I am more and more impressed what this little inexpensive thing can do.

Using my active shortwave antenna (RF-Systems DX10) I can receive signals down to 14kHz (RSDN-20, SAQ ...) , with my ICOM AH8000 Discone I can hear FM-Radio, DAB, DVB-T and even shortwave down to 10MHz.
Now its time to explore the frequencies beyond 1000Mhz.

Thank you for this solution SDRplay-Team!

With the latest Win10 Pro version 1511 build 10586.164 ,The start.bat file didn`t seem to do anything at all regardless of permissions set.

So I ran a shortcut from dump1090_sdrplay.exe to the desktop, Then right clicked on the desktop shortcut and set all permissions to full.
Then set Compatibility mode for Windows 7 and ticked Run the program as an administrator. Then to shortcut and added the lines from the
the original bat file to my new shortcut.
...example..... T:\__SDR_W10\dump1090\dump1090_sdrplay.exe --interactive --net --net-ro-port 30002 --net-beast --mlat

This worked well. Also using a triple 5/8 over 5/8 antenna designed for 1090mhz to preamp LNA4ALL to a homemade 900mhz highpass filter to my Sdrplay. The filter is necessary to get the preamp to behave well with the sdrplay, Since the sdrplay is set with levels quite high.

The filter and preamp combo works also very well for inmarsat reception with a 15 element yagi.
I`ve found if you add a 2nd reflector (400mmx400mm tin foil on plastic sheet) behind the yagi at a spacing of 1 wavelength.
You will get quite a good boost in signal strength. Haven`t tried this yet with my 21 element yagi for 1090mhz,
That will be my next experiment.

If anyone would like pics or links let me no...
cheers from VK3......Tony.

I"m currently having trouble to get that running with Globe-S (or ADSBscope for that matter). When I change the Dump1090 port to match the Globe-S input setting I"m getting a crash (in a VCRT module as it seems):

Faulting application name: dump1090_sdrplay.exe, version: 1.10.2910.14, time stamp: 0x56ee5193
Faulting module name: ucrtbase.DLL, version: 10.0.10137.0, time stamp: 0x556ebf74
Exception code: 0xc0000417
Fault offset: 0x00075054

No urgency involved. Would be nice though to get Globe-S running and consecutively SBSPlotter to get some nice footprint plots to compare.

The Windows version has a fault with the built-in HTTP server and cannot be used. The other outputs work fine. For example the beast mode output 30005 to Virtual Radar works well.

We'll try to address this in future releases.

Best regards,

Much appreciated, thanks! I'll try the working port in the meantime.

Was very glad to learn that dump1090 is now available and working for the SDRPlay. I installed the software today and having good reception with an indoor antenna designed for ADSB . It was easier to get things up and running with the SDRPlay than it was with the RTL-SDR dongle on my Raspberry Pi, which currently provides data to FlightAware.

I configured adsbScope to display aircraft positions rather than Virtual Radar Server. Was having some port conflicts with my older version of VRS and found it is easy to use adsbScope. I am confident the problems can be resolved when I devote a bit more effort.

Also introduced a few extra parameters in the start.bat file. Easy to experiment and make changes quickly that way.

Hope that the dump1090 web interface that we use on the Raspberry Pi can eventually be made available for the SDRPlay version. Actually it is a very useful display and can be easily customized: plane color based on altitude, range circles, MLAT vs ADSB position, etc. Also facilitates easy access from another computer.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to releasing dump1090 for the SDRPlay and kudos on the documentation. Makes installation very staightforward.

Hi,

Just got my SDRPlay. Acquired it primarily for ADS-B decoding.

The dump1090_sdrplus version on the repository is not giving me good enough results. Half the number of mesaages and fewer aircrafts compares to my R820T2 USB dongle.

The dump1090 version, on the other hand, starts, and starts giving 'USB buffer overflow' errors repeatedly.

Any clue what could be wrong here?

Thanks.
