SAQ Christmas Transmission with RSP1

Post by DK7OB » Sat Dec 24, 2016 11:58 am

I recorded the SAQ Christmas transmission on 17.2 kHz with my RSP 1. Antenna was a home made PA0RDT mini whip active antenna.

I actually remembered to listen this year! Nothing for the first 20 mins or so, then I started hearing 'VVV de SAQ', very weak. I suspect my Wellbrook loop is well below optimum performance at such a low frequency, but the noise on my homebrew mini-whip is way too high to copy weak signals.

You also have these strange signals around 16 kHz and 18 kHz, Wolfgang. I have already suspected toys from my neighbours. But they seem to be "real" as you have them, too. That on 18 kHz seems to be weaker at your location. Maybe there are similar electronics in households near you. Don't know: Photovoltaic inverter, lawn mowing robot charger or something. I have no clue. I cannot clearly assign any known services to them.
BTW: Top is an active whip similar to PA0RDT, bottom is a 5 m broadband loop (suffering from nearby magnetic RFI).
Location: Down in the Danube valley of S. Germany.
Picture is not an RSP, sorry ;-)
