3rd party Metal Case for SDR1

Post by W2DLC » Thu Apr 27, 2017 5:34 pm

Can anyone relate their experience with one of the metal cases on sale out there for the SDR1? Does it really help?

I can't see it doing much at all unless you have a powerful source of QRM very close, such as using your RSP taped to your laptop or plonked on top of a switch-mode PSU.

I designed the case to meet all the minor complaints and aesthetics of the RSP-1.

1 A solid attractive metal case that can handle abuse.
2 All connections in the rear
3 All the inputs labeled
4 A decent FM notch
5 A ground lug
6 A travel case for on the go.

I solved the problem! Since the time I bought the SDR1, I've had problems with my QRP transmitter overloading the receiver, even though I have it connected through an automatic switch box. I tried all kinds of isolation techniques, and each helped a little with other types of interference, but not with that problem. Finally, I bought the $15.95 aluminum box that's being sold on eBay, and the problem is solved. I can finally use the SDR1 as my main receiver. I can confirm that it really does make a big difference. Having it enclosed also seemed to lower the noise floor by attenuating other types of interference. The waterfall is obviously cleaner when it's in the metal box than it is in the plastic box.
