Another newbie antenna question

Post by dloose » Tue Jun 06, 2017 2:11 pm

What is your noise floor?
Been using an RSP-2 for about a week. For HF I am using a simple 80ft long wire into the Hi F port. Lead in is ~7 ft of same 14g wire; about 3 ft inside.
My noise floor is about -102 db. I'm just wondering how this compares to some of you others with fancier rigs. Seems to be working well across whole HF spectrum.

Noise floor will depend a lot on frequency and time of day - especially for the lower HF frequencies. Often radio amateurs talk about the noise level being S7 or even as high as S9 as particularly noise. S1 or S2 is 'quiet'...... You are seeing around S4 which sounds plausible - this wiki site maps dBm to S-meter readings. Glad you are enjoying the RSP.
