Automated Field Strength Measurements

Post by Stereo100 » Tue Oct 31, 2017 5:21 pm

I desire to use RSP2 to conduct mobile Field Strength measurements of the FM Band (88-108 Mhz) over a large geographic area while driving.

This will require automated and repetitive tuning of RSP2 to pre-determined frequencies (88.1, 92.7 100.3...repeat from 88.1), capturing the Frequency and Signal Strength (S-Meter value) as well as the capture of Lat/Long data from a GPS receiver connected to a separate Com port on my laptop.

The desired CSV file should look something like this:

88.1, 45, Lat, Long
92.7, 32, Lat, Long
100.3, 52, Lat,Long
-->repeat from beginning frequency 88.1

Any suggestions on either how this can be done with existing or custom software?

Hi Stereo100,

Sorry for not answering your question directly.

If you are the support person for these stations then I recommend you try Radio Mobile. If you have the TX details (PWR, antenna height, feedline loss) it will plot a very accurate coverage map of the terrain surrounding the site. The plot can be scaled in S-units, dBm, uV, uV/m. The software has a bit of a learning curve but the online version will give you a good idea of what can be done.

You can write the software yourself (the API and its documentation are freely accessible)
