RSP1A - RF Damaged?

Postby GM4ATA » Sat Oct 13, 2018 7:30 pm

OK, so I did not disconnect my RX antenna from my RSP1A whilst transmitting with a nearby (very) antenna using >100w. Am I correct in assuming that the damaged caused to my RSP1A is irreparable? From what I've read in the forum the answer is yes but I'd like confirmation.

Cheers

Hi John,

How do you know it is damaged?
What tests have you carried out?
Most things are repairable - for a price.
If it really is damaged your first stop is to seek advice from SDRplay support

I want to work as through radio amateur SAT a duplex, for a reception to use SDRPLAY RSP1A on frequency 430mhz, and for a transmission transceiver of FT897D on frequency 144mhz power 5 Watts. Prompt me, my SDRPLAY will not be damaged ?

Hello UT4NJ,
If your RSP and transmitter co-exist on the same antenna, it most certainly WILL be damaged. The RF power will be dissipated in the BAV99 ESD protection diodes and such power density dissipated in SOT23 surface mount packages will melt them.
If they are on separate antennas, whether damage will occur or not will depend upon your type of antenna and the separation. As song as the separation is >> 1 wavelength, you should be ok, but we would recommend that you check to ensure that the power at your receive antenna does not exceed +10 dBm.

Sincerely

Hi VK3ALB .....the only "test" I have tried is to try to use the RSP1A.....no signals being received at all on any band in spite of the bands being very busy this morning with contest activity.
I knew that I should not TX with the RSP1A powered on and connected to a near field antenna and it was not done intentionally but I had forgotten to disconnect the antenna when I was transmitting. The RX antenna is a Windom with it's feed point within 2m of my MA5B ....the MA5B has been used on various bands at 400w .....oh dear!!
I suspect that if I need to get my RSP1A working again I'd be better off buying another?
