SDR PLAY & Android phone

Postby woodmutt » Thu Mar 07, 2019 11:33 pm

Can SDR Play be connected to an Android cell phone to receive the radio signals? Do I need to down load an SDR driver?

Yes we have a driver that works on Android. It is currently in open beta:

https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.sdrplay.driver

It works with SDR Touch (which is not our product, it is developed by Martin Marinov):

https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... 2&hl=en_GB

There are free and paid for versions of SDR Touch

Your device must support OTG cables. Once the RSP is connected via an OTG cable, start the SDRplay driver, then start SDR Touch.

There are apps on the Play Store that can check whether your device is OTG compatible if you are not sure.

Best regards,

Hello good people of SDR Play,
Apologies if I should have created a new topic, I always get confused with form etiquette!

I have finally got around to installing the Android driver and SDR Touch on my new Android phone.
Installation was fine, and that is as far as it gets.

Opening SDR Touch and 'turning it on' displays that no device can be found.
Opening the driver's app, Enabling the advanced/debug mode also states no device found.

Thins I do know:
-RSP1A is working fine on Windows and Linux
-OTG on my phone works, SDR Touch works with a generic RTL dongle and respective driver.
-Phone should be able to provide more than enough power via OTG, phone is advertised as being able to charge other phones via OTG (10,300mAh battery!)

SDR: SDRPlay RSP1A
Phone: Ulefone Armor 3, Android 8.1

Please let me know if I can provide any further information! :)
Kind regards,
Damien

Hi Damien,

I made some tests with RSPduo and Android 7. I used the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 tablet, a fairly heavy weight tablet. here is my experience.

1) You MUST provide a D.C. supply to the RSP: To do this you use an external USB hub complete with its own 5 V supply.

2) You MUST buy and pay for the on sale version of SDRTouch (e.g. the SDR TOUCH key) otherwise chances are the system opens up on the day of February 30th only.

3) You connect the phone or tablet to the USB hub (PC port) and any USB port to the SDR.

4) Once you open up the SDR TOUCH key, with its red carpet, chances are that the system will fire up, but finger tuning on the phone/tablet screen is not easy.

5) Operation can stop at any moment. When this happens you probably have to re-boot the phone/tablet in order to resume operation.

6) Just forgetting....better you get yourself acquainted with SDR operation on SDRplay before you tackle this.

Have a ball!
