Would 1/2 wave be better? And, if I string it horzontal I don’t need a ground?

I'm taking my SDR camping for a couple weeks. Thinking that 20 meter band is most active, would I want about a 17' wire for 1/4 wave on that band?

I'm taking my new RSP1A camping for a couple weeks and want to put together a long wire to hang in a tree. What is the most active band right now and how long should the wire be for that band? Will be in Black Hills area of South Dakota.
