Great L-Band Performance

Post by retux » Thu Jan 07, 2016 10:20 am

The performance of the SDRPlay in the L-Band is just simply astonishing!
Received pretty strong iridium signals with an omnidirectional antenna (GPS-QFH)

Can you post some info regarding your antenna? I would like to build or buy one. Do you have a source?
Thanks

I guess he is using a Vaisala RS92 weather sonde, they send them up all around the world a couple times a day and is just to track and go get them when they fall back down, google Radiosonde. I have moded one to, not tested yet tho.

Yes, your guess is exactly right. Although I don't use the electronics of the weather sonde. I just cut the PCB and soldered on a sami rigid coax with SMA connector:

You could try to build a QFH by yourself but i suppose it might be a little bit difficult because of the small size.
On the SDRPlay page on Facebook Paul Jones posted a design for a vivaldi-antenna. This type of antenna might be easier to build. Just remember that vivaldi antennas are directional.

Hi,

nice setup, how do you mount the antenna - are you using a dish or do you mount it on a stand and point it to the satellite.

i am asking because i am using the following equipment:

Logper antenna:

LNA4all:

60 cm Offset Dish:

SDRplay

This setup works more or less but SNR is max @16db which is pretty bad, irdidum is much more worse....

So maybe you have a pic for me of your setup - thanks
