Unable to record or playback

I don't know what I am doing wrong wrong - but when I click on the record button for the first time it comes up with the error message "unable to open output wav file". The rec button lights up - but that is all.
When I click on the play arrow I would expect it to open up a file location at least - but nothing happens.
Help....
