raspberry pi, SDRplay, and aprs

Hi all,
My goal is to connect the sdrplay to a raspberry pi and have the pi decode aprs packets. I can do this on windows and I have this working with the cheap dongles by running rtl_fm and piping the output of that into direwolf. I've seen on here that some people may have got some of the rtl_sdr software working with the SDRplay, but I have no such success trying to follow posts. When I run rtl_test -t it can't see the SDRPlay. I've installed the SDRPlay api and compiled the rtl software among many other things I've tried.
Does anyone here have such a setup working and if so can you give me some more details of what you did?
Thanks
