I'm still waiting for my SDRPlay but I want to know is it possible to power a preamp through the antenna socket with the SDRPlay?
Most other receievers have this option, and even the simple rtl sdr's can be easily modified to provide 5V at the antenna socket
IF it doesn't, is it possible to "mod" it so we have 5v power at the socket?

Strange that you're asking that because usually antenna amplifiers are supplied with a power feed unit.
Anyway, I don't think it would be possible and/or a good idea to modify the SDRPlay module.
First by the nature of surface mount circuit of the RSP it would be hard to modify it without doing some damages to the circuit.
secondly it would certainly void the warranty.
A simplest way would be to build a small power feed module like the one for a PA0RDT antenna.
( look at the power feed in the document from the link below )

Just feed 5v instead of the 12v needed for the PA0RDT. The advantage of this method is that it will protect the receiver from feeding dc voltage.
