There is one thing I don't like on USB devices it is the need for an external USB cable 
Depending on the one you use ,it's length,whether or not its uses ferrites, performances change.
Especially when you forget to take the good cable with you
May be it would be a good idea to use a good tail cable ,of say 1meter, with ferrite beads inside the box and at the free end.

There is an SDRplay for Linux actually here http://www.sdrplay.com/downloads/ if i'm not mistaken.
