Check out the new custom band framing feature in SDRuno

The latest update to SDRuno (V1.42 build 0817) includes the much requested custom band-framing feature.   Band-framing has long been a useful feature because it enables instant set-up of popular amateur or broadcast bands at the push of a button – making it very similar to using a traditional hardware radio. The picture below shows the example of selection the 20m amateur band from the “Ham Lower” dropdown menu:

However, many people would like to customise their own specific bands (it may be a subset of one of the standard offerings or indeed a span of frequencies not previously available).

This is now possible by the provision of a new custom band-framing panel which allows users to create their own choice:

SDR: It’s all about the Hardware and the Software and the Support

Here at SDRplay we are very aware that many of our users are not experts in computer science and many want to use their SDR as if it were a hardware receiver.  They don’t want to be editing or compiling software or searching for special files and so on.  By its very nature, an SDR  is however very much to do with software, so we see our challenge of being able to gradually make our software easier and easier to use while at the same time adding more and more functionality.  Those 2 things alone can be a conflict, but we strive to get better and better at this.

Then there’s the hardware. Given that a good wideband SDR receiver can be put to any number of uses, and used in such a variety of environments, then preempting and minimising real world signal problems underpins the hardware design and test methodologies.

We don’t pretend we always get it right for everyone, but our aim is to ensure that customers who buy an RSP feel they are getting an ever improving quality product from a supplier who cares about the complete offering (Hardware and Software and Support)

Today, there an interesting article by the popular RTL-SDR.com SDR news site popped up, which mentioned the fact that we are recognised for doing a good job in this regard.   We wouldn’t normally publicise a competitor’s product by referring to a negative article about them – but in this case we were so encouraged by the positive recognition for SDRplay, from the software developers of  SatDump and SDR++ who are quoted in the article about the RX888 SDR (which on paper has higher specs than our 14-bit RSP family).  They write “ If you want a good SDR for HF, get something from SDRPlay, Airspy or so on” and ” Making a wideband HF frontend is an art, and you’re not gonna get any good result from something built down to a price like it” – the author of the RTL-SDR then goes on to add his own observations: “This entire saga highlights the fact that software defined radios are not only about the hardware specs. The support and state of the drivers from the manufacturer is key to allowing third party developers to integrate the device into their software“.

Software news and reporting bugs

Work is continuing towards our year end plan to release SDRconnect (the multiplatform version of SDRuno formerly known as SDRuno V2.0 )

In parallel we are releasing the features promised in SDRuno V1.42 of our Roadmap  where you can see details of what has been released and what is yet to come.

Facebook and other online forums can be incredibly useful tools for disseminating information. Many people are able to get valuable help and information that can make hobbies such as ham radio and radio listening so enjoyable for so many people. We are grateful to all those members of the community who tirelessly help others with their expertise.
.
However, these same forums can also be a significant source of misinformation which can confuse and frustrate.
.
Whenever we put out a new release of SDRuno, we always see a substantial spike in people reporting problems and ‘bugs’ which they associate with the new release. This is completely understandable, but the problem occurs when people imply that the ‘bug’ that they perceive is an actual verified fact.
.
In the overwhelming majority of cases, these reports whilst well intentioned are erroneous and the stated ‘bugs’ simply do not exist. In almost all cases, the problem relates to simple user error, a misunderstanding or a problem with the individual’s hardware or system setup.
.
Since the first release of 1.42-0720, we have only been able to verify two new bugs. The first was a problem with memory panel scanning on the slave tuner for the RSPduo, which we fixed in 1.42-0728. The second problem appears to be a Unicode problem associated to non-English Locales. This is quite subtle and we have only had three reports so far. The problem manifests itself as an access violation upon exit which is in fact related to saving information to the SDRuno.ini file.

In all other cases, new ‘bugs’ reported to us have not been bugs at all.
.
So far, there have been around 13,000 installations of 1.42-0728, so the notion that it is in some way “unstable” does not appear to be bourn out in practice.
.
As a company, we take bugs very seriously and genuinely try very hard to thoroughly test software before releasing it. We need to know about problems that we have not been able to find in testing, but we also want to avoid a situation where we spend considerable amounts of time trying to validate ‘bugs’ that turn out to be no such thing.
.
If anyone finds what they believe to be a problem associated with our software we urge them to use the following procedure BEFORE reporting their issue on Facebook or other social media as if it were a verified fact:
.
1. Check the release notes. Is the issue listed as a known bug? If not, does the problem seem to relate to any of the listed changes?
2. If the answer to 1 is no in both cases, please check your own setup and settings carefully.
3. If you still believe that there a problem, PLEASE contact SDRplay. If you can find a repeatable sequence of steps that triggers the problem, send an email to feedback@sdrplay.com
4. If you are still not certain as to whether what you are seeing is a bug or not, please open up a support ticket via the Help sectin of our website and we will work with you to try to understand the issue. Please always give a detailed description of the problem and illustrate with screen shots if at all possible.
5. Once we have verified that your issue is indeed a bug, please feel free to post as widely as you want!

What we are keen to avoid is the ‘wall of noise’ that can drown out the facts and cause considerable confusion. We also want to get good clear information so that we can understand and fix problems. We do NOT sit monitoring forums looking for bug reports. When we see such reports, it is usually just as a result of casual browsing.
.
The next release of SDRuno will add custom band framing. That is all that is planned for this release and that is currently in testing. We don’t meddle with stable code for the fun of it, so if your sensitivity suddenly seems well down, it is almost certainly not related to the new release. The release after next will attempt to address all know (and hence documented) remaining bugs.

Monitoring Jupiter – Project JOVE update

Dr. Chuck Higgins recently spoke at the Society of Amateur Radio Astronomers Eastern Conference about the new affordable way in which amateurs can make accurate measurements of Jupiter’s radiation.   The RSP1A allows them to monitor sufficient spectrum with the accuracy they need.  Check out the video below to find out more:

JOVE is a US-based public outreach, education, and citizen science project using radio astronomy and a hands-on radio telescope for science inquiry and education. Radio JOVE 2.0 is a new direction using radio spectrographs to provide a path for radio enthusiasts to grow into citizen scientists capable of operating their own radio observatory and providing science-quality data to an archive. Radio JOVE 2.0 uses more capable software defined radios (SDRs) and spectrograph recording software as a low-cost ($350) radio spectrograph that can address more science questions related to heliophysics, planetary and space weather science, and radio wave propagation. Our goals are: (1) Increase participant access and expand an existing radio spectrograph network, (2) Test and develop radio spectrograph hardware and software, (3) Upgrade the science capability of the data archive, and (4) Develop training modules to help people become citizen scientists. We will overview Radio JOVE 2.0 and give a short demonstration of the new radio spectrograph using the SDRplay RSP1A receiver with a dipole antenna and the associated Radio-Sky Spectrograph (RSS) software.

In this new video, John Fallows, VE2EY describes how diversity reception works, & talks about how well the RSPduo performs for both signal enhancement and noise reduction over such a wide spectrum of frequencies:

 

The RSPduo is a true dual channel receiver which when used with SDRuno gives diversity reception.   It can also be used for real time antenna comparisons for example on HF when conditions are constantly changing.  It’s also great for monitoring two widely spaced bands of frequencies (say 80m and 2m amateur bands, or ATC and ADSB) as demonstrated in this video:
